Repair of Cuboid Fractures
The indication for cuboid fracture repair is a lateral column length deficiency of 2 mm or more. The main contraindication to surgical management of cuboid fractures is a soft-tissue condition that makes an incision risky, such as burns to the dorsal skin. If the soft tissues are compromised, surgical intervention can be delayed until it is safe to proceed; however, the patient should not bear weight throughout this period. Good outcomes and normal function are possible with open anatomic reduction and internal fixation. With proper attention to the soft tissues and an extended period of non–weight bearing, few surgery-induced complications arise. This chapter discusses the indications, contraindications, surgical steps, and potential complications associated with open reduction and internal fixation of cuboid fractures.
