Cases Solved! Fingertip and Thumb Tip Injuries
Cases Solved! is a journal-based CME activity series presented by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons.
Each activity consists of an interactive clinical case scenario based on a recent article from the Journal of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (JAAOS) followed by a multiple-choice assessment to put your diagnostic and management skills to the test.
These current, peer-reviewed articles touch on important areas of orthopaedic patient care and describe how the article impacts practice behavior and/or systems of care.
Learning Objectives
- Discuss the anatomy of the distal finger and nail bed.
- Describe appropriate evidenced-based treatment options for the management of nail bed injuries and partial fingertip amputations.
- Review the indications and contraindications for flap reconstruction of fingertip injuries with the use of local and regional flaps.
- Explain the surgical steps for local and regional hand flap reconstruction, including incision, flap elevation, attachment, and closure.
- Identify steps to prevent complications associated with the management of fingertip injuries.
