External Fixation of Distal Radius Fractures
External fixators, both spanning (crossing the radiocarpal joint) and nonspanning, have been used successfully for many years in the treatment of distal radius fractures. Over the past decade, with the advent of volar locking plates, there has been widespread interest in open reduction for these injuries. Similarly, new low-profile plates have been designed to buttress displaced facets of the radial and dorsal columns of the distal radius. Despite this shift, recent randomized clinical trials have demonstrated equivalent successful patient outcomes with either technique if equivalent fracture reduction is obtained.
