Revision Shoulder Arthroplasty for the Management of Implant Wear or Loosening
Shoulder arthroplasty is a reliable procedure for the management of arthritic conditions of the shoulder, and good results are achieved in most patients. Improved surgical techniques and implant design have resulted in expanded indications for shoulder arthroplasty; therefore, the use of this procedure has substantially increased in the past decade and is projected to increase further in the next 10 years. The survival rate for shoulder arthroplasty is 98% at 5 years but declines to 89% at 10 years and 70% at 20 years. Results of shoulder arthroplasty have been shown to improve in the first year after the procedure and then remain stable for many years. Between 8 and 20 years postoperatively, outcome scores gradually decline and patient satisfaction decreases.
