Acetabular Revision: Implant Removal
Because of the projected increase in demand for revision total hip arthroplasty (THA) procedures in the United States, arthroplasty surgeons must have a comprehensive understanding of the indications for removal of an acetabular implant. Indications for removal include mechanical loosening, chronic periprosthetic joint infection, polyethylene wear in a nonmodular cup, implant malpositioning resulting in instability, and bony or soft-tissue impingement. Periacetabular osteolysis may require acetabular implant removal if the implant is loose or damaged, or if access to the osteolytic lesion is difficult without removal of the cup.
