Autologous Chondrocyte Implantation for Osteochondral Lesions of the Talus
Osteochondral lesions of the talus (OLTs) occur frequently, especially in active persons who participate in high-impact sports activities. Usually, OLTs occur subsequent to sports injuries such as ankle sprains or fractures, but sometimes the patient does not recall a major trauma. Because the chondral tissue has very limited capacity for spontaneous healing, especially in the case of a wide lesion, surgical treatment is often required. The goals of the procedure are to completely resolve the symptoms, allow the patient to return to sports, and prevent progression to early joint degeneration by restoring a hyaline articular surface with biomechanical properties analogous to the native cartilage.
