Fractures of the Lateral Process of the Talus
The lateral process of the talus represents the most lateral portion of the talar body. It is structurally part of both the ankle and the subtalar joint. In the ankle, it contributes to the talofibular articulation; in the subtalar joint, it comprises the anterolateral portion of the posterior facet. The lateral process also serves as a site of ligamentous attachment for both the ankle and the hindfoot. An injury to this relatively small structure can have significant functional consequences; in the worst cases, both joints can develop arthritis. Unfortunately, the diagnosis is frequently missed.
