Treatment of Refractory Elbow Dislocation and Detection of the Elbow at Risk
Most elbow dislocations, even those with associated fractures, can be effectively managed by following a treatment algorithm that includes reduction of the elbow joint, fracture alignment and stabilization, and protection of the ligaments during motion throughout the healing phase. However, in some patients with elbow dislocation, redislocation may occur. If the redislocation is undetected and left untreated, the elbow quickly becomes stiff, and the cartilage of the elbow joint rapidly deteriorates and is permanently lost. Identification of the individual anatomic features of an elbow at risk for redislocation and recognition of other factors that cause a failure of detection and lack of recognition may help prevent or minimize permanent consequences.
