Insertional Achilles Tendinopathy
Patients with insertional Achilles tendinopathy commonly report pain in the posterior heel, specifically at the Achilles tendon insertion. Athletes often demonstrate acute symptoms secondary to overuse or training errors. In contrast, nonathletes often describe an insidious onset of symptoms over several months or years; these symptoms likely are the result of an advanced degenerative condition that can include calcification at the insertion. These patients may have comorbidities such as obesity and diabetes. Patients with calcific insertional tendinosis often report pain around a well-defined posterior bony prominence and most often experience pain and limitations regardless of age and activity level.
