The Pirogoff Amputation
The amputation originally described in 1854 by the Russian surgeon and anatomist Nikolai Pirogoff established an osseous fusion between the distal tibia and the shortened, rotated calcaneus. The subchondral transverse tibial osteotomy is made perpendicular to the mechanical axis; only the posterior portion of the calcaneus is used and is rotated as much as 90°. The calcaneotibial fusion preserves the heel pad and creates a full–weight-bearing stump with only minimal limb-length discrepancy; this end result restores maximum function and provides an acceptable cosmetic appearance.
