Arthroscopic Synovectomy of the Elbow
Arthroscopic synovectomy is a well-established technique to manage inflammatory synovitis, but it requires advanced technical skills in elbow arthroscopy. Synovectomy of the elbow is indicated for inflammatory arthritis that persists despite medical management and that is associated with pain, stiffness, and loss of function. In general, the best results of arthroscopic surgery are obtained in patients with some remaining articular cartilage and mild bony deformity (Mayo grades I and II). Although the outcomes of arthroscopic synovectomy generally are not as reliable in the setting of more advanced joint damage, the concern regarding the longevity of total elbow arthroplasty makes arthroscopic debridement and synovectomy a reasonable option in younger patients with more advanced articular and bony destruction (Mayo grade III).
