Femoral Revision With Cemented Stems
The main goal of revision hip arthroplasty is to achieve a durable construct with stable implant fixation, joint stability, and, if possible, restoration of bone stock. The femoral revision technique should be chosen on the basis of the specific patient’s needs in an effort to achieve the lowest possible short- and longer-term morbidity, high patient satisfaction, and a good functional outcome. Benefits of the use of cement in femoral revision include the possibility of immediate fixation, enhancement of proximal bone stock, the ability to bypass defects, and elution of antibiotics. This chapter reviews the indications, contraindications, results, and surgical techniques related to cemented femoral revision. Postoperative protocols and strategies for avoiding pitfalls and complications are also discussed.
