Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty With Short Stems
Total hip arthroplasty (THA) is a highly cost-effective and successful procedure. Most patients experience excellent clinical outcomes and long-term implant survivorship with well-designed prostheses. Although standard femoral stems have demonstrated successful results, innovations in femoral stem design have resulted from improved understanding of the biomechanics of native and artificial hips, advances in implant technology, and the increasing popularity of less invasive, tissue-sparing surgical techniques. Furthermore, the standard tapered stem design has several unresolved issues. Reasons to consider the use of short tapered stems in THA include conservation of existing bone stock, physiologic loading of the proximal femur, potential reduction of stress shielding, and the ability to address proximal-distal mismatch and other anatomic deformities.
