Management of Arthritis of the Fourth and Fifth Tarsometatarsal Joints
Although arthritis of the midfoot is a relatively common cause of pain and disability, involvement of the lateral joints is rare. Arthritis of the fourth and fifth tarsometatarsal (TMT) joints may develop as a primary degenerative arthrosis, as posttraumatic arthrosis, or secondary to inflammatory disease (ie, rheumatoid arthritis). Posttraumatic etiologies are common; patients often indicate that a traumatic event such as a minor sprain, a fracture of the fifth metatarsal, or a major injury to the midfoot occurred before the arthritic changes.
