Revision Total Hip Arthroplasty: Preoperative Planning
Preoperative planning is essential to the success of revision total hip arthroplasty (THA). These complex procedures require the surgeon to know what implants are in place, have the proper extraction instruments available for use if the implants will be removed, and have compatible matching trial and final implants available for use. Preoperative planning helps the surgeon evaluate patterns of bone loss, anticipate the need for special implants or bone grafts, and anticipate whether alternative implants and materials might be needed as a result of intraoperative findings. Perhaps most importantly, good preoperative planning involves a mental rehearsal of the proposed procedure by the surgeon; this rehearsal can help the surgeon work efficiently after the procedure begins. Numerous important considerations should be included in preoperative planning for revision THA. A preoperative checklist or worksheet for revision THA can help the surgeon organize surgical needs.
