Total Hip Arthroplasty in Obese Patients
Total hip arthroplasty (THA) has provided good quality and consistent results in patients with degenerative hip disease. The number of THA procedures performed annually in the United States is projected to increase to nearly 572,000 by 2030. The increasing proportion of obese patients seeking THA has contributed to this increase in demand. The United States has seen a marked increase in the prevalence of Americans who are considered obese. The mean national body mass index (BMI), calculated as a person’s weight in kilograms divided by height in meters squared, has increased to more than 30 in the United States. A 24% increase in the mean national BMI occurred over the 3-year period from 2001 to 2004. Age-adjusted prevalence of obesity has been reported to be 33% for men and 36% for women.
