Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty With Double-Tapered, Noncemented Femoral Stems
Double-tapered noncemented femoral stems can be used for total hip arthroplasty (THA) in almost all patients who have femoral geometry amenable to metaphyseal fixation. Modern double-tapered femoral stems typically are forged from a titanium alloy and have a dual taper, which often is approximately 3°. This taper angle is supported by studies demonstrating that more exaggerated taper angles result in an increased risk of intraoperative and early postoperative periprosthetic fracture. The design and surface coating of the metaphyseal region of each implant is unique and proprietary to the manufacturer. In addition, each stem design has modifications to improve primary stability, including vertical fins, horizontal steps, or a combination of these features
