Primary THA Through the Direct Anterior Approach With the Use of a Specialized Surgical Table
The direct anterior approach (DAA) for primary total hip arthroplasty (THA) is an intermuscular and internervous approach that preserves the abductor muscles. The use of the approach has increased as the result of the availability of training courses and facilities, improved surgical instruments, published data supporting the approach, and patient demand. Proponents of the DAA suggest that it is less invasive and results in less pain, earlier mobilization, and faster recovery compared with other approaches. Emerging clinical data will help determine whether these claims are supported. The modern DAA uses the interval between the rectus femoris and tensor fasciae latae (TFL) muscles for access to the hip.
