Massive Bone Loss as a Result of Blast Trauma
The current era of asymmetric warfare encompasses military operations and terrorist attacks against civilian targets, and blast trauma is the most common wounding mechanism. Because of improved body armor along with the application of principles of damage control surgery, improved prehospital care, and shorter evacuation times, more patients survive complex patterns of injury resulting from blast trauma. Additionally, extremity injuries now account for 50% to 70% of combat wounds.
