Glenohumeral Resurfacing
Glenohumeral arthritis in the young, active patient (younger than 60 years) is a challenging problem to manage. If function is not restored and pain is not decreased with nonsurgical management, then surgical options may be considered. For most patients with shoulder arthritis, total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA) is the preferred treatment to alleviate pain and improve function. However, not all patients are ideal candidates for TSA because of age, activity level, or associated pathology. In one study of shoulder arthroplasty in patients younger than 50 years, high rates of glenoid lucency after TSA and glenoid erosion after hemiarthroplasty were reported. Most importantly, patient satisfaction with the procedure was poor.
