Arthroscopic Distal Clavicle Resection: Optimizing Technique
Since it was first described in 1941, excision of the distal clavicle has been a recognized and largely effective technique in managing chronic painful conditions of the acromioclavicular (AC) joint, most commonly osteoarthritis (OA) and distal clavicle osteolysis. With the advent of arthroscopy, surgical excision via less invasive arthroscopic techniques has led to decreased postoperative morbidity and soft-tissue injury to the deltoid, capsule, and ligaments; less pain; and quicker recovery. Attention to outcomes has helped refine the ideal indications, technique, and amount of distal clavicle excision necessary.
