The Beach-Chair and Lateral Decubitus Positions: Key Surgical Principles
Two positions commonly used in arthroscopic shoulder procedures are the lateral decubitus position and the beach-chair position. The lateral decubitus position was first described for shoulder arthroscopy in 1984. The beach-chair position was introduced in 1988 in an effort to decrease the number of neuropathies seen with the lateral decubitus position. The choice of position is typically based on the surgeon’s training and comfort with the position, the risk of complications, the ease of conversion to an open procedure if needed, and the access to the shoulder afforded by the position.
