Subtalar Arthrodesis After Ankle Fusion
The success rate of subtalar arthrodesis after prior ipsilateral ankle arthrodesis is significantly lower than that of subtalar arthrodesis without prior ipsilateral ankle arthrodesis. This chapter presents a subtalar arthrodesis technique developed for these circumstances. Although results are limited, subtalar nonunion has not been a problem with the technique. The success likely relates to compression achieved across the posterior facet. Another advantage of the technique is that no bone graft is required. A downside is shortening, which generally measures less than 1.5 cm. No studies have been published on this technique. Indications and contraindications for this subtalar arthrodesis technique are outlines, as well as surgical keys for success, and tips for avoiding pitfalls and complications.
