Total Hip Arthroplasty: The Modern Posterior Approach
Evolution of the posterior approach to total hip arthroplasty (THA) has resulted in accelerated postoperative recovery times and decreased complication rates. Advancements in the understanding of hip joint anatomy and efforts to protect muscle and repair the hip capsule have resulted in improved tissue preservation with the posterior approach. These changes have addressed risks historically associated with the posterior approach, including a higher rate of dislocation or muscle injury that can lengthen or complicate rehabilitation. This chapter reviews indications, contraindications, and results of THA using the posterior approach, and details the surgical steps for the posterior approach in THA and how to avoid pitfalls and complications.
