Primary Total Hip Arthroplasty With a Cemented Femoral Implant
Femoral implant fixation in THA is the subject of debate. Since the 1960s, the use of polymethyl methacrylate cement has been the preferred method of femoral fixation in THA. Cemented femoral fixation continues to be used for most THA procedures in many European nations, with excellent results. In North America and some European countries, noncemented femoral implants have become more popular than cemented femoral implants. Because of the increased popularity of noncemented fixation in North America, some surgeons consider cemented femoral fixation to be a lost art. Cemented femoral fixation requires careful attention to detail and meticulous technique to obtain reliable long-term outcomes. This chapter reviews the indications, contraindications, and results of THA with a cemented femoral implant. Surgical techniques, alternative treatments, and methods for avoiding pitfalls and complications are also discussed.
