Lateral Approaches to Osteochondral Lesions of the Talus for Open Osteochondral Grafting
Osteochondral lesions of the talar dome have a broad spectrum of characteristics and a variety of treatment options. These lesions may affect the articular surface, the underlying subchondral bone, or both. The surgeon must be knowledgeable in the proper exposure and treatment methods to manage such lesions located anywhere along the talar dome. This chapter focuses on open approaches that allow perpendicular access to lesions in the lateral aspect of the talus. If the clinical scenario does not necessitate exposure of the lateral aspect of the talus, alternative approaches should be used to address the pathology.
