Venous Thromboembolic Disease Prophylaxis After Total Hip Arthroplasty
One of the most serious complications after total hip arthroplasty (THA) is venous thromboembolic (VTE) disease, which can consist of pulmonary embolism (PE) and/or deep vein thrombosis (DVT). According to Medicare data, the all-cause death rates in the first 90 days after primary and revision THA are 0.95% and 2.56%, respectively, with corresponding PE rates of 0.93% and 0.78%. All patients undergoing primary and revision THA, including patients with blood dyscrasias and coagulopathies, should receive VTE prophylaxis.
